Sweet Blind Cocker boy abandonded at shelter!
Murphy update as of 2/16/07 - Murphy's cataract surgery went with flying colors on Valentine's Day! He saw the eye doctor 24 hours later for a recheck and his eyes look good, the redness is normal and his inflammation is not bad at all. The eye doctor showed me the tiny stitches, unbelievable what a precise surgery it was. Murphy now needs 28 days of rest and no barking, jumping, playing or bumping into anything (he is in an e-collar) - to protect his eyes which will be in the healing process. He is also on multiple eye drops that he can't miss, for the next four months (the eye doctor says if we even miss a day of drops, it could ruin his entire surgery). Murphy is so HAPPY to be able to see, it is the neatest thing to see his eyes move as he looks at things. I feel like I'm witnessing a miracle with this little dog - and he has the greatest of homes waiting for him to heal up in a month. What a lucky boy Murphy is! And all thanks to all of your and your donations. Here is a short video from yesterday:
Murphy update as of 2/3/07 - he is scheduled for his Cataract Surgery on Valentine's Day! Then followed by a month of serious post-op caution. He will have to wear an E-collar at all times and no jumping or playing or barking or any chance of scratching his eyes. He weighs 24 pounds! Watch Murphy's four minute video below!
Murphy update as of 1/13/07 - he was weighed today and gained 1.9 pounds! (up from 22 pounds, he is now 23.9). He just had his second Ivermectin shot and is on the road to recovering from the sarcoptic mange. Watch Murphy's three minute video below!
Meet Murphy, a special needs dog in need of a Very Special Person to adopt him. He is much younger than the shelter thought, maybe only three at the most. He has cataracts and is blind right now, but the good news is that we have not missed the window of opportunity for him to get eye surgery and regain his sight. Murphy is also being treated right now for sarcoptic mange and has to be quarantined from other pets.
The most horrible thing we discovered about this poor sweet boy, is that whomever had owned him, surgically debarked him! Can you imagine doing such a thing to a dog and then ultimately dumping him at a shelter!
Murphy is SO thin, he needs some good meals and has obviously been quite neglected in his little life. He is still so puppy like in his energy, he gets super happy to hear a kind voice and be held or pet. When you hold him in your arms, he just melts into you,
like it is what he has been waiting for his whole little life, just to have human touch. I imagine that he was a forgotten about pet, living in someone's backyard and largely ignored. It seems that debarking him was the solution for his prior owners, rather than spending time interacting with him. He probably led a very lonely and isolated life and it must have gotten even scarier as he started to lose his vision. He weighs just a slight 22 pounds and based on his height, he should be at least a 27 to 30
pound dog. We think he is young because his teeth are bright white and his gums look great. It is not uncommon for Cocker Spaniels to get cataracts as young as two or three years of age - and we feel very grateful that we haven't lost out on the opportunity to get him in for surgery and give him sight again.Murphy is just FILLED with hope and happiness. He is a happy go lucky guy, which is quite amazing considering the neglect he has suffered through. He is a very good and cooperative doggie too - he rarely tries to bark (you can tell when he is barking, a whispery gaspy sound
comes out) again, it is just heartbreaking to know that someone had him debarked.
He is currently being fostered while he goes through treatment for sarcoptic mange and where he will also go through a month of post-op care after his eye surgery. His next eye doctor appt. is on 1/23/07 and we are hoping to schedule his surgery to follow shortly therefter, now that we've raised the funds (thanks to all of you whom have supported him!)

This was Murphy at the South L.A. Shelter - crowded in with other dogs and strange sounds, all the while sitting there in the dark and no one at the shelter even noticed that he was blind!
Update as of 1/11/07: Murphy's next eye doctor appt. is on 1/23/07 and we hope to be able to get his surgery scheduled asap. Will be keeping you all posted of his progress.
We are SO GRATEFUL to have raised your donations so that Murphy can see again. We have other smaller medical bills (see list at the bottom of this page) so if you would still like to contribute a little something, your help would be appreciated so much!
